Powered by FreeCap's criminal justice data and proprietary rating methodology, the report reveals the top 10 companies leading in fair chance hiring and prison risk mitigation: two key indicators of a company's impact on the criminal justice system. We also highlight the progress these companies have made since 2021 using data from our first Criminal Justice Report and provide detailed case studies to showcase best practices.

The report also includes insights based on our brand new Prison Vending Relationship dataset that tracks the revenue streams between 3,000 companies and corrections departments across the United States and quantifies how much each company has made since 2019.

Our report reveals that:

  • Apple, Target, Intel and Alphabet are some of our top-rated companies for their fair-chance hiring practices and their prison risk mitigation

  • Less than 1/3 of the S&P 100 have made public commitments to hiring formerly incarcerated workers

  • 95% of the S&P 100 report detailed workforce diversity statistics through an EEO-1, up from 64% in 2021

  • Less than 1/5 of the S&P 100 have explicitly banned prison labor use in their supply chains

  • The GEO Group Inc. has the most significant vending relationship with prisons, with transactions totaling over $1.5 billion between 2019 and 2022.

Reducing reliance on prison labor and instituting fair chance hiring policies is not just good practice, it also positively impacts companies’ bottom lines. Companies incur an outsized reputational risk by maintaining monetary ties to prisons, and there are strong economic benefits to reducing the barriers to employment for previously incarcerated individuals.

FreeCap’s data allows investors to account for the risk companies incur from being involved in the criminal justice system. With our data, aligning investments with racial equity values has never been easier. Check out our data subscription offering or contact us to learn more.
